We will miss you, Dr. Mike.

It was not so much of a surprise when we learned the sad news last Tuesday morning that Dr. Mike, as we all knew him, had passed peacefully at the grand old age of 96 but with much sadness for we shall miss him.

We, at BrightStar, have been caring for Dr. Mike since late 2010, helping him with his daily living activities and providing companionship. He has been a part of our daily lives, from the owners and office staff and so many of our loyal and dedicated caregivers.

Mustafa Ozerengin: many of our employees would not be able to pronounce his name but all of us knew who Dr. Mike was. Those of us in the office did not know him well, for the cruel Alzheimer’s disease had taken its toll on him by the time we moved into his life, and he never really said a lot to us, who must have seemed strangers, even though we knew much about his activities over the years at Delmar Gardens. But the caregivers talk about his moments of lucidity, expressing humor and telling them stories of his family and from his past. Dr. Mike was always such a peaceful man and must have had a full and active life before we knew him. We never had any difficulty finding a caregiver who wanted to look after him or to be a part of the small team who spent time with him over the years. I would not want to name them out of fear for leaving someone out but they know who they are – and so did Dr. Mike!

All of us at BrightStar will miss Dr. Mike for bringing some brightness into our lives and the opportunity to make a difference to his. Our condolences and sympathies go out to Meral and John who cared for him greatly and have always had his best interests in their hearts and minds.

David and Louise Evans and all of the staff at BrightStar
