On April 5, 2019, our Heavenly Father called his son, Paul Salvador Gonzales of Loganville, GA, home after a full life at the age of 84.  He was surrounded by family when he passed away.

Paul was born in Kanopolis, KS, in 1935. He graduated from Victoria Preparatory School in Victoria, Kansas. He then joined the United States Air Force, serving overseas in England.  While abroad, he was scouted by Major League Baseball before suffering a career ending injury to his pitching arm. Upon returning to the States, Paul married Frances Fernandez. After finishing active duty service, he transitioned to the United States Army Reserves and began a career in the baking industry. During this time, he attended Marymount College in Salina, KS. The baking industry took Paul from Kansas to Michigan and finally to Conyers, GA, where he settled and eventually retired as Bakery Manager for Golden State Foods Corporation. Paul was an avid baseball and softball player, bowler, golfer, coach, and fan.  He continued to play the game of softball until retiring from the game at the age of 75. Paul and his wife Frances were married for 58 years.  He lived his life to serve God, provide for his family, and to help and serve others, especially the under-served.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Pauline Gonzales; his sisters, Mary Moore and Beatrice Rodriguez; and his brothers, John and Stanley, all of Salina, KS.  He is survived by his wife Frances Gonzales of Loganville, GA; his sons and daughters, Salvador Gonzales of Phoenix, AZ, Mike (Wendy) Gonzales of Overland Park, KS, Lupe (Joe) Harding of Conyers, GA, Diana (Mark) Schroeder of Loganville, GA, Steven (Robyn) Gonzales of McDonough, GA, and Christine Gonzales of Loganville, GA; and his thirteen grandchildren in GA, KS, and MO. He is also survived by his brothers, Peter (Susan) and Robert (Cheryl) Gonzales of Grand Rapids, MI, and Joseph Gonzales of Wichita, KS.

In memory of Paul Gonzales, a rosary will be held on Wednesday, April 10th, at 7 p.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 2621 Highway 20 SE, Conyers, GA 30013.

The Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 11th, at St. Pius X Catholic Church.  Immediately following the Mass, a burial will follow at Honey Creek Woodlands located at 2625 Georgia Highway 212 SW, Conyers, GA 30094 that is open to all.  A lunch will be held after the burial at St. Pius X Catholic Church.

Flowers may also be sent directly to St. Pius X Catholic Church beginning on Wednesday, April 10th, but no later than Thursday, April 11th, at 9 a.m.

Dear Dad,
I can only imagine how you must be smiling down from heaven now. Your 84 years of service here on earth is complete. We all pray to one day join you in our Lord’s Kingdom. Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted.”

You have and will always be my best friend and role-model. You and mom were and will remain the rock of our family. You taught us how to put the Lord at the center of our lives and personally modelled it every day. You showed us how to love your spouse, children and others unconditionally. You exemplified hard, purposeful work, and humility. You taught us at an early age that our Lord is always watching, and to conduct ourselves accordingly. You taught us that leadership is about servanthood. Hence, the higher you elevate in life, the greater the servant you are expected to be. You showed us how to genuinely care about serving others, especially the under-served.

Meg Meeker, M.D. in her book, “Hero” asks three critical questions of all dads:

1. “Dad, how do you really feel about me?”
2. “Dad, what do you believe about me?”
3. “Dad, what are your hopes for me?”

Dad, you taught your six children, and many others you knew, the answers to these questions. You did so in the way you chose to live your life daily to serve Christ.

I will always love you Dad. We all look forward to rejoining you and others one day for an amazing reunion with our Heavenly Father.

Your son,

Bill Gustafson with Billy and Linda

From your neighbors at 333 N. Columbia, Salina, KS. Thank you for being such good neighbors in the late 1970s and early 1980s. We were sad to see your family leave Salina. I give my condolences to the entire family. Steven was about the same age as Jason and Gary. I do have one picture of Steven helping Bill, Jason, and Gary make a snowman. Sorry to hear Paul had died. He was a good man.
