Sarah Jackson Obituary

Sarah Jane Jackson passed away March 19, 2024, at the age of 94. She was a resident of Clayton, GA., for 31 years. She was born on September 13, 1929, in Savannah, GA. Her mother was Lillian Irene Brinson, a member of a prominent Wiregrass Georgia family, was born in Savannah, GA. This particular Brinson branch was also closely related to antique Scottish families tracing back to Margaret, wife of Malcolm Caenmor. Her father, Hugh Ryan Carver Saffold, was born in Guyton, GA., into a railroad family widely related to kin in the Ogeechee River parts of Georgia and Morgan County, GA. Hugh and Irene lived in Clayton for 25 years.

Jane was raised in Madison, FL., and Jacksonville, FL., and attended Robert E. Lee High School. In 1947, she enrolled at Florida State University and pursued a pre-med course. She graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree specializing in Public Health. In 1962, she resumed her medical education by completing a year-long internship in medical technology at Phoebe Putney Hospital in Albany, GA. She earned a medical technology degree certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology.

In 1951, she married Curtis R. Jackson in Tallahassee, FL., and in 1952, they moved to Jacksonville. She had her first child, Mark Ryan, in November 1952, then joined her husband as a Navy wife for temporary duty in Chicago, IL, and later in Norfolk, VA. Curtis Matthew was her Navy addition, then the family moved to Gainesville, FL., where she had her third child, Andrew Scott. After three years of residence in Bradenton, FL., the family moved again to Tifton, GA. The family remained in Tifton until 1968, during which time Savanna Kathryn, Jane Gabriell, and Peter Saffold were born.

In 1983, she moved with her husband and two children to Hyderabad, India, and began the life of an Expatriate wife in a very friendly country. She traveled throughout India, visiting Madras, Delhi, Goa, Kodia Kanal, and the Taj Mahal in Agra.

She and her children returned to Griffin, GA.in 1985 and then to Arlington, VA, where the Jacksons lived for six years before settling in Clayton, GA.

A private burial was held at Honey Creek Woodlands near the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, GA.
