Doris Inez (Wood) Stewart

November 15, 1937 ~ June 19, 2023 (age 85) 85 Years Old

Obituary

Heaven welcomed its newest angel in the early hours of Monday, June 19, 2023.  Doris Inez Stewart went home to be with her Lord, Jesus Christ and was greeted at the gates by her beloved Dean.

Known by Inez to her family and friends, she was the eldest child born to Ellis Theodore and Ruby Irvin Wood on November 15, 1937, at the family farm in Grayson, Georgia. She graduated from Grayson High School in 1956.

She met the love of her life in high school, Doyle Dean Stewart and they were married on November 21, 1957.    They were blessed with three children:  Thomas Dale Stewart, Dena Felice Stewart, and Lisa Rene’ Stewart.

Inez’s career began in accounting and banking in Decatur, Georgia.  She also helped her husband run the family gas/service station in Lawrenceville, Georgia.  She worked as Administrative Assistant to the Special Education Director in the Greene County School System for 22 years helping thousands of special needs children in the county.  She assisted her husband in opening Stewart Apparel and launching Trueblend Camouflage and Blue Horse Jeans.  She was the first lady of Greensboro from 1982-1992 serving the citizens of Greensboro alongside Mayor Stewart. Her last employment was Vice President of Operations at Household Effects in Greensboro, GA.

Her most important achievement in life was her Christian devotion which began at an early age at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Lawrenceville, Georgia.  Upon moving to Greensboro, she became an active member of the First Baptist Church teaching Sunday School, working as an Awana Leader, feeding the Youth Group on Sunday nights and a member of the Amicus Sunday School Class.  She was a founding member of Grace Fellowship in Greensboro, Georgia in 2004, where she was a member of the Cobb’s Grace Group.

Inez loved spending vacations in the Georgia and Tennessee mountains or the beaches of South Carolina and Florida hunting for seashells.  She enjoyed sewing, reading a good book, putting together a puzzle, planting flowers, gardening, baking with her family and Christmas.  She was a devoted wife and mother to her family her entire life.  Always sacrificing her time for others.

Inez was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dean Stewart, brothers Wayne Wood and James Wood and one sister Elaine Myers.  She is survived by her three children, brother Lonnie (Ruth) Wood, sister-n-law Dale Wood, numerous nieces and nephews and their families.  While on earth she was blessed with the friendships of Emma O'Neal, Barbara Torbert, Sandra Roper, Linda Duvall, and Caroline Voyles, along with her two adopted daughters, Susan Walker and Carmen Wright.  She leaves behind numerous friends from the Greene County School System, First Baptist Church, and Grace Fellowship.

A private wake will be held for family and friends on July 9th. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be mailed to Grace Fellowship at 1971 S. Main Street, Greensboro, GA 30642 in memory of Inez.
