Dr. Clifton Tumlin Bud Harris II, 88, of Winston-Salem, formerly of Asheville, North Carolina, passed away Wednesday at Atrium Wake Forest following complications related to pancreatic cancer.
Bud was born at Crawford W. Long Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. He attended Woodward Academy (then Georgia Military Academy) and the Georgia Institute of Technology before pursuing a doctorate in psychology and counseling at Georgia State University. He later earned a Diploma in Analytical Psychology from the C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich, Switzerland.
Bud was a lifelong voracious reader who wore many hats—husband, father, grandfather, author, lecturer, businessman, psychologist, and Jungian analyst. Above all, he was a seeker who believed deeply in human potential and in the healing power of self-knowledge, creative transformation, and the pursuit of wholeness.
Bud was devoted to his clinical practice, his writing, and especially to his loving wife, Massimilla, also a Jungian analyst. For thirty-five years in Asheville, North Carolina, they shared a full personal and professional life, building a thriving analytical psychology practice. It was during these years that he authored more than 25 books.
Always open to new ways of connecting, in recent years he expanded his reach through his blog, podcasts, and YouTube videos. He was also an active member of the Georgia Association of Jungian Analysts (GAJA), the Association of Graduate Analytical Psychologists (AGAP), and the International Association for Analytical Psychologists (IAAP).
Preceded in death by his sister, Laura Harrison, Bud is survived by his wife, Massimilla Maria Harris, and three children: Clifton Tumlin Bud Harris III of Atlanta, Georgia; Marjorie Perry (husband Gregory) of Roswell, Georgia; and Betsy Harris (husband John Swyers) of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Galen Perry, Benjamin Perry, and Sarah Miller; nieces Dr. Katrina Harris and Lauralyn Harrison; nephew Mark Harrison; and his dear brother, James Harris, of New London, New Hampshire.
A service and burial will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 19, at Honey Creek Woodlands in Conyers, Georgia, at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
