Joseph Girard Wernert passed away peacefully on June 24, 2025 in Stockbridge, Georgia, after a full life devoted to God, family, and country. He was born on August 31, 1941, in Toledo, Ohio, to the late Clifford and Frances Wernert. Joe was blessed to grow up in a close, loving family and often shared memories of his father’s quiet service to others through the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
A 1959 graduate of Central Catholic High School, Joe went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of Toledo and a master’s degree from Webster College. While attending the University of Toledo, he met and married the love of his life, Janice Blaser. Joe joined the ROTC and graduated in 1964 with a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
Joe served the U.S. Army for the next 34 years in both active duty and civilian roles. He began his military career as a platoon leader in the 59th Air Defense Artillery and continued in a variety of important command and staff assignments, both in the United States and overseas. During his tour in Vietnam, he earned the Bronze Star and Meritorious Service Medals. After leaving active duty in 1979, he continued his service as a civilian with the U.S. Army while also serving in the Army Reserve. In 1980, his duties brought the family to Georgia, where he worked at Fort McPherson and Fort Gillem. He retired from the Army Reserve with the rank of Colonel in 1997.
Joe remained active in service to his faith and community throughout his life. He was a dedicated member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and after retirement, he became part of the volunteer team managing the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store in Hapeville. For 18 years, he gave his time and heart to this mission, positively impacting countless lives. At home, Joe pursued his love of gardening, becoming a certified Master Gardener and finding joy in the beauty of landscaping.
Joseph is survived by his beloved wife, Janice; his children, Amy, Joel, and Karen; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and his brothers, James, Philip, and Stephen.
Joe will be laid to rest at Honey Creek Woodlands in Conyers, GA. His simple marker will bear his name and two words that defined his life: "He Cared."
Visitation 10:00 am, and Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 Monday June 30 at St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church, Jonesboro, GA.
