After a challenging battle with dementia and an intestinal disease, Mary Kathleen McNeal passed away peacefully on October 12th surrounded by loved ones.

Born in Winterhaven, FL, Kathleen's travels as the daughter of a U.S. Marine began. Her family lived in North Carolina. California, and Hawaii before moving to Georgia, which would become her home.

Kathleen married her first husband, Robert William Charles in September of 1967 in Roswell, GA. Out of this marriage was born her two children, Virginia "Ginger" Elizabeth Smith, and James "Jim" Patrick Charles.

Kathleen was a kind and loving soul who raised her two children while also supporting the household in a variety of business roles. Her career with the State of Georgia culminated as the Director of Human Resources for the Department of Human Services.

In retirement, she met and married her loving husband Sam McNeal. Kathleen and Sam travelled frequently, happily spending time together until Sam's passing in 2018.

Kathleen is the daughter of Virginia and James Carey and sister to Michael Carey and aunt to Kevin, who predeceased her. She is survived by her daughter Ginger and her son Jim along with her granddaughters Ellie, Mary, Emma, and Angie. Also mourning her loss are her sister's Peggy and Maureen along with her nieces and nephews Michael, Jr., Deliah, Lisa, Jessica, Michael, Brian, Deanna, Clint, Raymond, Colleen, Brian, Caroline, and Ellen.

A funeral mass will be held at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Lithia Springs, GA on October 21, 2023 at 11:00 am. A reception will follow the mass.

Kathleen will be interred on November 18, 2023 at 3:00pm at Honey Creek Woodlands in Conyers, GA.
