Phillip Barry Obituary

Phillip Clark Barry

1942-2018

Phillip Clarke Barry of Atlanta, passed away on Friday, October 19, 2018 at Piedmont Hospital from Multiple Myeloma. He was 76.

Phil was born in Sumner, Iowa to Raymond and Anne Schmit Barry on September 19, 1942 and grew up on a farm with his five siblings in Fairbank, Iowa. He graduated from Immaculate Conception High School and served in the Army National Guard in Iowa. He then worked his way through college with stints on the railroad and skinning minks and graduated from Iowa State University where he was a member of Phi Kappa Theta.

Phil moved to Atlanta in 1970 and began his long career in commercial real estate with Portman Properties. He was most recently a partner at Avison Young where he was engaged in his work until three weeks ago. He was proud of his work as a board member at The Elaine Clark Center, supporting children with special needs, and was an active member of Buckhead Rotary. He was a member of the Capital City Club and a devout member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. He loved the outdoors—fly fishing, hunting, sailing, and walking his dog, Maxx. He especially loved cooking for his friends and family, an avocation he developed as a cook in the National Guard. He was an avid reader of history, particularly the lives of the U.S. presidents.

Phil enjoyed a 46-year marriage to, his wife, Diane Gerringer Barry, from Greensboro, North Carolina, who survives him. He was blessed in many ways but was most proud of and cherished his daughter, Clarke Barry of Durham, North Carolina; son, Hilton Barry, and daughter-in-law, Carol, and especially his grand-daughter, Brecklyn, all of Smyrna. His five siblings also survive him: Pat Smith, Hal Barry, Eleanor Buzynski, Roger Barry and Ramona Brumley.

Services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, October 22, 2018 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 4465 Northside Drive, NW, Atlanta, 30327 followed by burial at Honey Creek Woodlands, 2625 Highway 212 SW, Conyers, 30094. During the last year, Phil gave up drinking his beloved red wine to concentrate on his health, putting the wine money aside for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation to the MMRF in his memory. https://tribute.themmrf.org/PhilBarry.
