Shirley Towle Obituary

Shirley Ann Giguere Towle, age 74, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 11, 2024 surrounded by her family.

Shirley was born on October 28, 1949, in Jamestown, TN to the late Wilfred and Willie Giguere. She grew up in Jamestown, RI where she discovered her love for the ocean on her many ferry rides to school every day. She graduated from Mt. Saint Joseph College with a degree in psychology and a minor in social studies. Shirley met Ray and he was immediately drawn to her authentic personality. They were happily married and Ray’s career in the Army brought them to many places beginning the adventure of a lifetime.

Shirley was a loving mother who dedicated her life to her two daughters. She was a doting grandmother to five grandchildren who loved her beyond words. She enjoyed spending time with her family more than anything else in this world. Shirley cherished every cheer competition, soccer game, baseball game, lacrosse game, theater production, orchestra concert and art show that she proudly attended as the biggest cheerleader in the stands. She left them with amazing memories of summer adventures, card games, candy making and shopping trips. Her unconditional love shines bright in each of them.

Shirley was a natural born leader and has always been called to serve her community and church. She was a physical education teacher at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School in Columbus, GA. When Ray was stationed in Berlin, Germany, Shirley jumped right in and was eager to serve when selected to be the President of the American Women’s Club of Berlin organizing events for the women of the community far from home.  After returning to the states, Shirley found ways to stay active in the church. Ray and Shirley are founding members of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church. Shirley took on many leadership roles as President of the Women’s Guild, President of the Atlanta Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, the SW Providence Director for Georgia, providing food for the homebound and many other committees. She was very strong in her faith and loved to pray the Rosary.

In her spare time, Shirley loved to travel with friends, make cards, cook, and watch sports. Her kind spirit, sense of humor, love for others, strong work ethic and big personality will be greatly missed. Shirley was truly one of a kind!

Shirley is survived by her husband Ray Towle, her daughters Jennifer (David) Marvin and Erica (Thomas) Elrod and her grandchildren Reese Elrod, Maggie Marvin, Emi Elrod, Devin Elrod and Samuel Marvin.

There will be a mass on Friday, August 16, 2024 at 11:30 am at Saint Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Newnan, Georgia. Family will be in the narthex at 10:30 am. Following the ceremony, Shirley will be laid to rest at Honey Creek Woodlands 2625 GA-212, Conyers, GA at 3:00 pm
