Stephanie Durden Obituary

Stephanie Lynn Durden, 54, of Winder, Georgia, passed away February 14, 2024, after a long illness. In life, with a cheerful heart, she gave much to many. In death, she will continue to give. New pines will spring from the nutrients her body releases in the green cemetery where she will be buried. Remembering her spirit will encourage us to nurture the parts of us that are like the best parts of her: compassion, generosity, thoughtfulness, and appreciation of the smallest things.

We pray that the battle she seems to have lost on earth to alcohol, and the factors that led her to it, will kindle a victory for others. We pray that we will all recognize the insidiousness of this addiction that is encouraged at every turn by our culture. We will see this disease that creeps up on us and destroys our organs before we know it; yet we love it. Dear friends, Stephanie lives on. Listen to her warning.

Stephanie was a woman of faith in God. She gave herself to Jesus in her 40s and was filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. When she realized her death was near, she said she was sad, but not afraid. She knew she had already won the war.

She is survived by her mother, Alice J. Walker, her father, John H. Durden, Jr., her sister, Jessica W. Crocker and her husband, Johnny Cosby, her nephew, Clate Crocker, her lifelong friend, Mary D’Avanzo, her aunt and uncle, Karen and Greg Mack, and many dear friends and family members.

Pastor Pete Mattix, who baptized her, will preside at the graveside service. It will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, February 17, at Honey Creek Woodlands, which is a part of the Monastery of the Holy Spirit at 2625 Georgia Highway 212, Conyers, GA 30094. Please wear casual clothes and boots or closed toe shoes – no heels. Her burial will be in the pine forest. Gather at the office to be led into the burial grounds. Please, no flowers or other plants.

The burial grounds are located across Highway 212 from the Monastery on Susong Road. The map attached to this website will lead you to the Monastery, not the burial grounds. If you input Honey Creek Woodlands in your GPS instead of the address, it should lead you directly to the burial grounds
