Steven Whitworth Obituary

We are called to celebrate the life of Steven Earl Whitworth, 56,  who passed away on January 19th, 2018. He is survived by his wife Catherine Whitworth and three sons, along with a host of family and loved ones. Steven was born January 19th 1962 to Stella and Earl Whitworth in Anchorage Alaska, before the family returned to Georgia.

Steve had a zest for life and chose to make the most of his time on earth, always striving for academic and professional excellence. As a married father of three he worked long hours at a construction company while earning his degrees at night. During his time at Georgia State University, he embraced the “Touching the Earth” philosophy which focussed on learning, not only through study, but by experiencing nature, building connections with people, and serving others in need. From there, he went on balance his life building a business and raising a family with enjoying as much of the world as he could. Over the years he embraced camping and hiking before venturing into mountain climbing and skiing. While enjoying the mountains, he also made time to embrace the sea learning to dive and sail. Eventually he would manage to fulfill a childhood dream and explore the sky. Steven worked to earn his pilot’s license and become type-rated in six different jets.

For all his adventures and triumphs, his greatest was his family. He had no brothers but was blessed instead with three sons Michael, Matthew, and David. His goal was to raise his sons to seek their potential while remembering to help others. Steve always felt that they, not his company, were his legacy and sought to instill in them those values. He would find new joys as a grandfather to four wonderful children, Roman, Ansleigh, Ethan, and Aiden.

Steve, like the rest of us, was not perfect but he believed in trying to make the world better.  Even as his health failed him, he would use his time and remaining abilities volunteering with the community. He asked that those wishing to honor his memory consider donating their time, talents, or money to charity. Steve held a special fondness for The Food Pantry and Habitat for Humanity but would appreciate any service given to others.

There will be a funeral Mass held for him at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Griffin, Wednesday the 24th at 11am followed by a fellowship and celebration in the church social hall. In keeping with his love of nature there will be a natural burial service later that day at the Honey Creek Woodlands Burial Grounds at the monastery in Conyers at 3:30 pm.
